Ian Boddy and Parallel Worlds "Exit Strategy"
An excellent collaborative work between Ian Boddy and Parallel Worlds.
"Exit Strategy" by Ian Boddy and Bakis Sirros of Parallel Worlds is a dynamic release featuring seven richly textured songs that stand out in my mind as some of the best music I've heard all year. Using analogue synths, Boddy and Sirros have created a strong collection of multi-layered songs with a particular attention to detail that all warrant further investigation. Opening with the haunted space-y sounds of "Portal" with its ominous percussive elements, a certain sci-fi mood is set that carries through into the next track "Impressario", a dramatic soundtrack sounding piece that brings to mind the sonic architecture of Alan Wilder era Depeche Mode. Keeping along a similar sci-fi vein but traveling in a somewhat different direction, "Soliloquy" and "Entwined" form an insectile suite of sorts, the sound of chitinous shells moving through a crystalline labyrinth of chiming tones, of fluttering flies trapped in a spider's web, and a mournful flute that builds an ominous tension. "Exit Strategy" and "Hidden" bring the listener back to more relaxing spaces as created by rolling percussion and melodic keyboard work alongside mysterious chimes and bright choruses. "Return" closes the disc with a nice combination of subtly nuanced tracks blending together and building into a dramatic and expressive piece that ends everything on a high note. There's no doubt in my mind that "Exit Strategy" is a strong showing from Boddy and Sirros, and I have high hopes that the two of them will continue to work together in the future. rik - ping things
