Steve Roach "Immersion III"The latest in the Immersion series by Steve Roach, a trio of discs featuring stunningly beautiful long form ambient work.
"Immersion III" by Steve Roach is an impressive achievement from an artist who's career has been filled with highlights and significant releases that have come to define the ambient genre. Made up of three long form tracks, each over an hour in length, Roach has crafted a masterpiece of atmospheric creation, a sustained work that intrigues and maintains the listener's interest over an extended period of time, allowing them to fully explore and experience a new world created by the music."Part 1 : First Light" opens with a rotating drone, vaguely metallic sounds in the distance and subtle movement around the soundfield. Over the course of the piece's length there is gradual shift from one location to another, yet the shift is so subtle and gradual that you don't notice it happening until you realize you've been fully immersed in a new space. A fascinating study in creating an organic and living environment. "Part 2 : Sleep Chamber" begins in much the same way, but differs in that from the beginning there are vague suggestions of tonal shift. Rather than pure drone, "Sleep Chamber" gives the listener the barest hint of melody, and while very subtle, it provides an anchor for the listener, something to focus on as the drones drift by. Spacey and drifting, just fragments to identify with, creating quite a moving listening experience. "Part 3 : Still" continues in a similar vein, with a slight melody playing between the drones, the suggestion of music rising up from a slow swirl. Once again the movement is subtle and minimal with only occasional change and variance throughout the length of the track. Minimal and microscopic, it remains fascinating, a fully formed world and environment in which the listener may explore. Needless to say, "Immersion III" is an impressive collection, a work that envelops and completely surrounds the listener for the entire length of all three discs. I've written a few times about the effort in maintaining a mood and theme throughout long form work, and have complimented Roach on his earlier forays into this style, but there's no question in my mind that with the release of "Immersion III" he's set a new standard for himself, a new level by which all future efforts will be compared. Truly a collection of work that will stand with some of Roach's finest. rik - ping things
