Numina "Shift to the Ghost"
Long form ambience at it's finest.I believe that Jesse Sola, aka Numina, has written some of the most hauntingly beautiful music of the last ten years, and that his talent improves with each album. It should come as no surprise then that his latest disc "Shift to the Ghost" continues this pattern, a work that improves upon his already well-respected talents and reveals itself as one of his most impressive releases to date. The disc begins with "Secret Souls", a haunting piece using droning strings that rise and fall like breath. Slow melody takes form over the course of the track, just on the edge of the senses, something becoming clearer, more distinct, as time passes. "Through the Unseen Barrier" follows, taking us under the sea where tones flow like water and bubbles slowly rise to the surface. It's a mystical, otherworldly track, something suggesting the sounds of Atlantis and other undersea lands. Quite inspired. "Spiral Reminders" uses a steadily chiming tone throughout, a constant anchor in a shifting landscape of sounds and spaces. A collection of pads play in the higher range, giving a depth to the track that appeals both sonically and aesthetically. "Arrival to Nowhere" is a haunting track where wind scrapes along metal walls and corrugated roofs, all the while bending and straining under the weight of greater forces. Tones arc and curve and drift in and out of the senses in a haunting way. It's a dark and desolate track, something that brings to mind ghost towns and abandoned warehouses, ghostly faces looking out of windows covered in dust and grime. "Light Travelling" has a darker and heavier feel to it, oscilating tones shifting through the soundfield in a deep spiral of sound. Choral voices can be heard in the distance singing folksongs from long dead civilizations, tales of bravery and betrayal and love and dreaming. And all the while we keep spiralling down. Around the seven minute mark, the track loses some of its tension and instead begins to float and drift, taking us by the hand as the turning of the world begins to slow... "Forever Falling" maintains the sense of floating and drifting from the previous track, adding an element of drama and theatricality. Sustained string tones fold and mesh and move together, back and forth, around and around. It's a powerful piece, something beautiful and elemental, the feeling of clouds and stars and all things wonderful. "The Hostless Ghost" closes the disc, a shimmering collection of pads floating in and around eachother. It's the sound of clouds in the nightsky, the sound of angel's wings soaring, the sound of stars singing. It's glittering, wonderful, beautiful, and a perfect way to end the disc. "Shift to the Ghost" is a fine example of Jesse's sheer mastery of the ambient genre, his talent for soundshaping, his knack for the creation of atmosphere. It all shines through on this release, proving once again that Jesse is an artist at the top of his game. Without doubt, "Shift to the Ghost" is a brilliant release, and I strongly recommend it to any fans of the ambient genre. rik - ping things
